What actually determines what an app costs

Nobody builds "an app." They build a specific set of screens, rules, and connections, and the price tracks that specificity almost exactly. Two apps that look identical in a pitch deck can differ by an order of magnitude in build cost because one stores everything on the device and the other syncs accounts, payments, and live data across many users.

So ignore any figure that arrives before a conversation about scope. The useful question is not "what does an app cost" but "which of these cost drivers does my app trigger, and how hard." Below is each driver, what pushes it up, and where you can hold it down.

How much does feature scope and complexity drive it?

This is the biggest lever, by a wide margin. Cost scales with the number of features and, more sharply, with the complexity of each one. A screen that displays content is cheap. A screen that lets a user do something stateful - and has to handle every way that action can fail - is not.

A rough ladder, cheapest to most expensive:

  • Content / read-only. Articles, a catalog, a directory. No login, data flows one way. The least expensive kind of app to build.

Does it need a custom backend?

A backend is the server, database, and API your app talks to. Whether you need one - and how custom it is - is often the second-largest cost line after features.

  • No backend. Everything lives on the device, or you use a ready-made service (hosted auth and database) with minimal glue. Cheapest, fastest, and enough for a surprising number of apps.
  • Off-the-shelf backend services. You assemble hosted building blocks for auth, storage, and push. Moderate cost, less control.
  • Custom API and database. You have business logic no off-the-shelf product models: custom pricing rules, an admin dashboard, integrations that must stay in sync, data you own and query your way. This is a custom software project sitting behind the app, and it is priced like one.

If your app is essentially a clean interface over your own unique rules and data, budget for a real backend. If it is a well-understood pattern, resist building one you do not need.

How much does design depth add?

Design cost runs from template-level to fully bespoke, and the gap between them is large.

  • Template / system-default UI. You lean on the platform's standard components and a light theme. Fast, clean, cheap, and the right call for a lot of internal and utility apps.
  • Custom but conventional. Your own look, your own flows, built on familiar patterns users already understand.
  • Bespoke, animation-rich UI. Custom interactions, motion, and a distinctive visual identity where the interface is the product. This is where design and engineering hours climb, and where Flutter earns its place, because it draws its own pixels for exactly this kind of work.

Design is not only how it looks - it is how many states each screen has (empty, loading, error, success) and how much of that is drawn from scratch. Why do integrations add cost one at a time?

Every third-party service you connect - payments, maps, analytics, messaging, a CRM, an ERP - is its own small project. Each has an API to learn, credentials and accounts to manage, failure modes to handle, and a version that will change under you later. Three integrations is meaningfully more work than one, not a rounding error.

Integrations also carry a hidden tail: when the external service updates or breaks, that becomes your problem to fix after launch. Count them honestly at the start.

One platform or both?

Apps ship to iOS, Android, or both, and the "or both" is a real decision with real cost. There are three ways to cover both stores:

  • Cross-platform (React Native or Flutter): one codebase serves both platforms. This is the sensible default for most apps and the most cost-effective way to reach both stores. React Native is the natural pick when your team already lives in React and JavaScript; Flutter is strong when a custom, animation-heavy interface is the whole product.
  • Native (two codebases): SwiftUI for iOS and Kotlin for Android, built and maintained separately. You choose this when you need the deepest platform fidelity or heavy device-specific features, and you accept roughly two builds' worth of work.
  • A progressive web app: an installable web app with no app store at all. Often the cheapest route for lighter, content-first needs where native device features are not central.

For most budgets, cross-platform to both stores beats maintaining two native codebases. Native is a deliberate trade you make for a specific reason, not a default.

The cost people forget: after launch

An app is not a one-time purchase. The moment it ships, a recurring line begins, and leaving it out of the budget is the most common planning mistake in this work.

What that ongoing cost covers:

  • OS updates. Apple and Google ship major OS versions every year. Your app needs testing and, periodically, fixes to keep working on them.
  • Store compliance. Both stores change their rules and reject apps that fall behind. Staying published is ongoing maintenance, not a one-time approval.
  • Platform fees. Apple and Google both charge a developer-account fee to publish - a small annual fee for Apple and a one-time fee for Google Play. Minor next to build cost, but real and easy to forget.
  • Monitoring and fixes. Crash reporting, bug fixes, security patches, and keeping your integrations and backend running.

Budget for maintenance from day one. A common way to frame it is an annual percentage of the build cost, and ongoing maintenance is a service line for exactly this reason.

How do I get a useful, honest estimate?

A real number comes from tightening scope, not from a calculator. Three moves do most of the work:

  1. Scope tightly. Write down what the app does in plain sentences, feature by feature. Vague scope is what makes quotes balloon later.
  2. Separate v1 from later. Decide the smallest version that delivers the core value, and explicitly park everything else. Most "it costs too much" problems are really "we tried to build v3 first" problems.
  3. Expect a discovery step. Any honest partner will want to scope before committing to a number.
